Design/methodology/strategy ‐ Critical dialogue of the impact of poor oral health and potential for college-primarily based educational intervention, and evaluation methodologies utilized by the authors. Findings ‐ Using HPS to improve oral health is relevant because dental caries and gingivitis/periodontitis negatively influence children’s health and high quality of life worldwide. Established measures to improve oral hygiene supply an achievable, low-cost HPS entry level; the “knowledge” and “healthy practices” elements central to the WHO HPS model are tried and tested and multiple potential benefits are documented. Poor oral health is a non-stigmatized issue, therefore intervention is quickly accepted, and efficient analysis tools present evidence of program impact over a brief timeframe. Originality/worth ‐ Oral health promotion is more inexpensive and sustainable than the price of conventional restorative treatments especially in middle- and low-revenue countries.
